If Auto Car is using a lot of Oil, Fuel?
This varies greatly from car to car and giving an estimate of how much your particular car should be using would be impossible. If you are not aware of any leaks and the car is not belching smoke, but it is using a tin of oil every 1 000 km, then that’s just the way it is. If you’re concerned, ask your mechanic to have a look. But if your car is using a lot of oil and smoking, you may need some expert advice, not only from a mechanic, but also from your bank manager.
Auto Car is using a lot of fuel
Can you smell the petrol? You may have a petrol leak. This is very hazardous, especially as your car might explode — haven’t you seen it happen in the movies yet? Check to see if there are any markings underneath your car if it has been stationary for a while. Take into consideration that petrol evaporates fairly quickly and will leave only a faint trace. There may be a leak in the petrol tank itself or on one of the hoses leading from it. We strongly recommend that you have it seen to immediately.
Auto Car Fuses
The fuse box is usually located in the front of the car near the driver’s compartment, alternatively underneath the bonnet, close to the driver’s compartment. Fuses are colour coded and marked according to their capacity. There should be a map of the fuse board indicating which fuse is for what. There should also be a funny looking plastic tool that looks like a clothes-peg. You use this tool to pull out or replace a fuse. In the event that you, or rather your car, has a blown fuse (the metal strip is clearly burnt out), always replace it with one of the same capacity. If you have no spare fuses, try to locate one of the fuses (according to the map) that does not have a vital function (so leave the lights, brakes and engine out of the equation) and use it as a temporary replacement. Buy spare fuses as soon as possible and always have them in the car. You may be on a long road trip and have the radio’s fuse blow — inspiration enough?
Auto Indicator light inside the car is working double speed
One of the indicator bulbs is not functioning and has probably blown, don’t stress, this is not major and you can fix it yourself. But do this immediately; driving without indicators is terribly debilitating (not to mention dangerous) and will surely be met with fierce verbal and other forms of communication from fellow road users.
But before you rush off to replace a bulb, first check whether it is not just a fuse that is blown. Once you have established that it is the bulb, you may, depending on the ease of access, decide to replace it yourself. Remove it and take it with you when purchasing a new one. A note of warning. Bulbs are highly sensitive to pressure and may burst if handled incorrectly, causing injury. You should also never touch the glass of a halogen bulb. Always hold it by the base.
Auto Car Preventive measures
Take your car for regular services as indicated in your car’s service manual. Should your car be under warranty, you should only take it to an authorized dealer to avoid your warranty from being cancelled. If your car is no longer under warranty, sure you can have it serviced anywhere — just make sure that you find a reputable workshop. Once you have found a mechanic that understands you and your car — stay there!
Have your wheel alignment checked every 10 000 km. Once it needs adjusting you will experience muscle stiffness in one arm, caused by having to hang on to one side of the steering wheel for the car to go straight. It will also cause the tread on the tyres to become uneven. Have the wheel balancing checked while you are at it. Have your shocks checked on a regular basis; you can believe the advertisements. Inspect the tread on the tyres; you should be able to slip in a match leaving very little of it protruding on the surface. We’ve had a few scary experiences with worn tyres in the rain, and combined with worn shocks, it’s a very short journey to becoming a person of faith.
If you suspect that something is wrong with your car, take it to your mechanic or a service centre. They are usually kind enough to have a look and tell you what the damage is, if any, before they start working and before they start charging you. Rather safe than sorry.
